HP091 Instrument Engineer
We are seeking an Instrument Engineer to provide engineering support to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the development, test, and integration of space physics instrumentation. This is a full-time, on-site position that requires the ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
Position duties:The selected individual will provide support for the fabrication, manufacturing, testing, and assembly of scientific instrumentation, along with related support equipment and laboratory facilities.
Education: Master’s degree and a minimum of seven years’ experience (or equivalent combination of degree/experience).
Required Experience:
- Experience working on both flight and non-flight projects.
- Knowledge
of NASA scientific instrument and technology development and
workmanship requirements and procedures and flight hardware
manufacturing policies, standards and processes, including but not
limited to:
- J-STD-001XS: Assembly and Soldering
- NASA-STD-8739.1: Staking, Bonding, and Conformal Coating
- NASA-STD-8739.4: Cabling and Torque
- 540-PG-8072.1.2: Fastener Torque
- 300-PG 8730.6.1: Electrostatic Discharge Control
- Ability to pass NASA training certifications including J-STD-001 and NASA 8739.4, CCH.
- Ability to design, fabricate, and/or procure parts for use in lab experiments or testing.
- Experience using a soldering station and using test equipment.
- Knowledge of – or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of – manufacturing techniques for vacuum and space applications (acceptable materials, coatings, tolerances, etc.)
- Working knowledge of – or ability to acquire knowledge of – the proper care, handling, storage and testing practices for Microchannel Plates (MCPs).
- Working knowledge of – or ability to acquire knowledge of – lab vacuum systems, pressurized gas systems, thermal vacuum systems, motion control stages, high voltage wiring, oscilloscopes, power supplies, amplifiers, signal/function generators and other laboratory equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and provide feedback on work instructions, schematics, wire lists, and engineering drawings.
- Ability to coordinate equipment acquisitions, installations, and maintenance.
- Ability to execute day-to-day efforts to maintain laboratory and test facilities, including safety training and documentation.
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with residency in the US for the past 3 years is required.
Desired Experience:
- System/mechanical assembly experience.
- Cable and harness fabrication experience.
- Experience with the manufacture, assembly, and modification of printed wiring boards (PWB) and printed circuit boards (PCB) including hand soldering and SMT components.
