OC219 Science Writer Education Communication Specialist

We are seeking an Education Communication Specialist to support the Heliophysics Education Activation Team (HEAT) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. HEAT is committed to enhancing Heliophysics literacy and broadening public understanding of NASA’s Heliophysics research. HEAT aims to make Heliophysics—the study of the Sun and its interactions with Earth, other planets, and the space environment—accessible to diverse audiences. The team works closely with NASA scientists and missions to develop and deliver educational content and experiences that engage learners of all ages across the nation. This is achieved through innovative educational materials, professional development, learning resources, and public engagement initiatives.

Duties:Educational Product Development

  • Assist in the brainstorming, development, and formatting of general NASA HEAT products.
  • Conduct copy editing for various materials for publication.
  • Develop new digital products using existing content, ensuring they are engaging and suitable for social media platforms.
  • Ensure all products comply with 508 standards and NASA Style Guide requirements.

Communications Coordination

  • Provide final touches, reviews, and revisions for products.
  • Serve as a liaison between Heliophysics in the Office of Communications and HEAT.
  • Establish and manage deadlines for communication reviews if necessary for dissemination.
  • Track educational product development and coordinate with external partners.

Event Support (as needed)

  • Prepare for conferences and events by providing materials, activity ideas, presentation concepts, and assisting with abstract development.
  • Staff booths at events to engage with audiences and distribute materials.
  • Deliver talks and presentations on heliophysics and eclipses at events.

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of experience working with MS Office, SharePoint, and Google Docs.
  • At least one year of experience in the fields of science communication, education, and/or public outreach.
  • Familiarity with NASA communications policies and procedures is highly desirable.
  • Proven excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to write and edit educational materials in Spanish would be beneficial.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in physical sciences, journalism, education, or related fields.

Additional Information/Requirements:

  • Position requires local residency in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area.
  • Hybrid work options are available.
  • Position is initially funded for one year, with extension contingent upon excellent performance and renewed funding.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with residency in the US for the past 3 years is required.
