  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.

About NASA Goddard Space Flight Center – General Coordinates Network (GCN)

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center runs the General Coordinates Network (GCN; gcn.nasa.gov), NASA’s open-source alert system for time-domain and multimessenger astrophysics. GCN distributes automated alerts (Notices) and human-written observation reports (Circulars) from NASA missions, international missions, and ground-based observatories to thousands of astronomers and observatories around the world. It is key NASA infrastructure for coordinating rapid follow-up of fast astronomical transients and variable sources.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a full-stack web developer to help operate and develop GCN. You will work closely with developers and scientists on the web application, the Kafka service, and user support.

Job Description:

GCN is open source; development happens in the open at github.com/nasa-gcn. Day to day you will:

  • Build and maintain features across the full-stack GCN web application
  • Extend the serverless backend on AWS
  • Write and expand automated tests
  • Develop the Notices Kafka broker, the Circulars database and search index, and the client libraries astronomers use to consume the alert stream
  • Collaborate with NASA scientists and engineers on new features that advance astronomy and astrophysics around the world

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a physical science (or equivalent degree/diploma)
  • 3+ years of professional web development experience
  • Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript, React, Python, AWS, and Git/GitHub

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience
  • Experience with AWS services including CloudFormation, Lambda, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, EC2, Elastic Container Service
  • Familiarity with Apache Kafka
  • Experience with the Remix web framework
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code for serverless applications (e.g., Architect / arc.codes)
  • Knowledge of accessible web design standards (Section 508, U.S. Web Design System)
  • Knowledge of astronomy and experience working with scientific data
