SOHO’s 2000th Comet Discovery

January 10, 2011

SOHO’s 2000th Comet DiscoverySESDA II staff achieved another milestone in supporting the discovery of SOHO’s 2000th comet on December 26, 2010.  The event was reported in a NASA press release. The actual discovery was made by amateur astronomy student Michal Kusiak of Poland using images from the SOHO Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) that were processed by staff.  Over 80% of the comets discovered with LASCO come from a single group known as the Kreutz family, believed to be the remnants of a single large comet that broke up over several hundred years ago.
