GD157 Science User Support and Communication Specialist
This position requires a motivated and capable scientist with hands on experience using earth and atmospheric science data to provide end-to-end support for the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) in the broad areas of environmental data and science user support. The successful candidate will have familiarity with remote sensing data, processing, and typical analysis involved in refining lower-level satellite data to higher level products and can communicate and facilitate the use of our NASA archived mission data and products with our users. These data products include legacy, current and future NASA Earth Science mission data (satellite and modeling), and discipline-related products (such as Atmospheric Composition, Climate, and Water Energy Cycle, hydrology, precipitation etc.) For more information about the GES DISC please visit our web site (http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/).
The responsibility of this role involves developing clear, engaging, and scientifically accurate content to enhance the usability of GES DISC data and services. This includes creating scientific articles, “Data in Action”, use cases, and user outreach materials that effectively communicate the value and applications of GES DISC datasets.
The position also requires analyzing and summarizing high-impact scientific research utilizing GES DISC data and supporting user inquiries. A large component of the responsibility also includes interfacing with users and understanding data and usability issues they encounter while accessing or using GES DISC data and services. The responsibilities can be summarized in the following broad areas:
- Scientific Content Development:
- Create compelling and informative scientific articles and use cases that highlight the applications and impact of GES DISC data and services.
- Develop “Data in Action” stories, news articles and Jupyter Notebooks that showcase real-world use cases, demonstrating how GES DISC data contributes to scientific research, policy decisions, and operational applications.
- Ensure that all content is well-researched, accurate, and aligned with NASA’s standards for scientific communication.
- Synthesize the Journal articles:
- Identify and review high-impact scientific studies that have utilized GES DISC data and summarize their findings in accessible formats.
- Analyze trends in scientific publications and user engagement to highlight emerging research areas and innovative uses of GES DISC datasets.
- Collaborate with scientists and researchers to understand their data needs and success stories.
- User Support and Outreach:
- Respond to user inquiries related to data access, tools, and services available.
- Develop user guides, tutorials, and FAQs to improve data accessibility and understanding.
- Engage with the scientific community through webinars, workshops, and presentations to promote data and services.
- Track metrics relevant to data product and services requests, access, issues, or feedback relevant to service improvements.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Work closely with the internal User Needs team, including scientists, data curators and developers.
- Keep up with the advancements in Earth science data management, visualization, and user engagement strategies.
- Develop or present materials in various internal or external workshops, science team meetings, conferences, or workshops as needed.
Minimum Requirements:
- M.S. in atmospheric, earth, or environmental sciences or related physical sciences/engineering, and remote sensing experience with 3+ years hands on experience supporting satellite mission data.
- Familiarity with scientific programming languages- Python, R and geospatial tools (ArcGIS, QGIS), data visualization, and strong understanding of science data formats like netCDF, HDF etc.
- Experience writing and communicating complex scientific concepts in a clear and engaging manner and.
- Proficiency in analyzing and summarizing scientific research.
- Ability to provide user support and create instructional materials related to Earth science data.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with attention to detail and clarity.
- Experience working with Earth science data repositories or geospatial data platforms.
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with US residency for the past 3 consecutive years.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.
Desired:
- Ph.D. in physical or earth sciences or related engineering or remote sensing experience with 5+ years hands on experience supporting satellite mission data
- 2+ years related experience; scientific programming experience and skill with use of languages such as (Python, IDL, perl, C/C++, Fortran) and data formats HDF/HDF-EOS, HDF5, netCDF4, GRIB, and metadata
- Experience in an operational data center or serving external users or with NASA missions
- Experience with proposal writing and development is plus
- Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environments
