HP098 Support Scientist

We are seeking an experienced Support Scientist to assist with the continued development and testing of the CIMI model, as well as to conduct analysis of space weather events. This is a full-time on-site position at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the continued development of the CIMI model and its integration with global magnetospheric models like the Space Weather Modeling Framework (SWMF).
  • Support testing new model features.
  • Support and conduct modeling and analysis of space weather and geospace events using the CIMI model, SWMF, and associated tools.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, Ph.D. preferred, in Physics, Engineering, or related field.
  • Thesis or other proven experience focusing on computational space science.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with SWMF and BATS-R-US MHD code.
  • Proficiency installing and running SWMF/BATS-R-US/CIMI models on supercomputing systems for the simulation of geospace events and associated scientific analysis.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with the CIMI model. Specifically, experience in radiation belt modeling with CIMI, incorporating artificial source terms into the model, and simulation of artificial radiation belts.
  • Proficient with scientific visualization tools, in particular Python and ParaView.
  • Experience with empirical AE models of the radiation belts.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Background Investigation through NASA.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to track energy flow through the system with the SWMF model is a plus.
