NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), nestled in the Maryland suburbs of Greenbelt is located just 30 minutes from the heartbeat of America – Washington, D.C.  NASA, the pinnacle of human achievement wants you to join the team.  The Senior Science Writer/Editor/Manager works on behalf of all NASA centers and Earth Science Division (ESD) efforts. Goddard is located in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., though there is the potential flexibility for remote work/telecommuting at the discretion of the NASA customer. KBR is seeiking candidates to serve as the Senior Science Writer/Managing Editor for NASA’s Earth Science News Team (ESNT) on the Space and Earth Science Data Analysis (SESDA) contract. The news team identifies, reports, and develops written and multimedia stories and releases about NASA’s research results in Earth and climate science. The group also supports major media, field, and public awareness campaigns. The ESNT collaborates closely with NASA’s Office of Communications and the leadership of NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD).

This Senior Science Writer/Editor/Manager position reports to the Prime Contractor Earth Science Group Manager and the Subcontractor Program Manager for the SESDA Contract. SESDA supports a broad range of science disciplines; the development and use of scientific computer systems; engineering data analysis; engineering efforts to develop new technologies for scientific instrumentation; software application development and implementation; and computer system management for science exploration research.

Creating content for a science institution requires initiative, persistence, and diplomacy. As a translator between scientists and engineers and the public, you need patience, an ability to accept constructive criticism, and a healthy self-confidence in your craft. The public has high expectations for the depth and quality of NASA’s communications, and this demands acute attention to detail and accuracy

Duties will include but are not limited to the following.


  • Manage and advise writers and video/social media producers on all stages of content development.
  • Liaise with ESD communications team and ensure that all content is aligned with ESD communications strategy.
  • Collaborate with ESD communications team on developing standard operating procedures and ensuring that ESNT members adhere to them.
  • Lead communications campaigns for field missions, topical campaigns, and major Earth science events.
  • Assign and edit news releases, web features, and other content for and social media.
  • Oversee development of social media content. 
  • Collaborate with data visualizers, writers, editors, and scientists to develop imagery, animations, videos, social media campaigns, and interactive features.
  • Build and maintain a network of subject matter experts within and outside of NASA.
  • Assist NASA’s Office of Communications with media inquiries and scientist interviews, and with the promotion of NASA Earth Science to partner agencies, universities, and media outlets.
  • Support annual review efforts by providing employee performance inputs to management, including obtaining feedback from government customers.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years working in science communications or journalism
  • Experience with content and copy editing
  • Experience with journalistic fact-checking and proofreading
  • Ability to work well within a distributed team
  • Experience in leading teams of at least 5-10 employees
  • Strong consensus building and team-building skills
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.


  • Experience with managing editorial traffic — organizing and juggling multiple projects and adapting to breaking news
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams in a dynamic operational environment
  • Education or experience in communicating about Earth or physical sciences
  • Proven ability to work under weekly and/or daily deadlines
  • Experience or coursework in data journalism
  • Experience in social media content development
  • Strong consensus building and team building skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
