NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, nestled in the Maryland suburbs of Greenbelt, is just 30 minutes from the heartbeat of America – Washington, D.C. Now you can have it all – the nightlife, museums, great food and theatre, while working at a place that pushes the envelope of science every day, yet spy a deer or a Canada Goose, as you stroll the grounds of Goddard during lunch.   We are seeking a Scientific Software Developer with a minimum of 1-5 years of experience to join the staff at the XMM-Newton Guest Observer Facility (GOF), housed within NASA Goddard’s Astrophysics Science Division, to support current and new development for the XMM Science Analysis System (SAS) software and Extended Source Analysis System (ESAS) software.   The XMM GOF provides several aspects of mission support, including software development and testing, running the guest observer grants program, and providing various levels of user support. Specific duties of this Scientific Software Developer position include: software development and support, configuration management, science enhancements and data analysis software support, and assisting with user support.  

Required:

  • BS or higher in Astrophysics, Astronomy, or Physics
  • C/C++, Python, and shell scripting in UNIX/Linux/Mac OSX context
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Desired:

  • Experience with Fortran
  • Experience with scientific software packages (e.g. FTOOLS) and FITS data format
  • Experience in developing portable/multi-platform software
  • Experience creating packages within package management systems (GitHub, MacPorts, Homebrew)
  • Science interest in creating new tasks to compliment science analysis and maximize science potential
  • XMM Science Analysis System (SAS)/ESAS experience
