KBR is looking for enthusiastic Data Science and Software Developers with implementation interest or experience in an agile framework to support work at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Earth and Data Information Services Center (GES DISC). The responsibilities for this project requires full stack engineering with team members performing multiple roles. We are also transitioning a significant portion of our on-prem operations to cloud processing so experience or certifications in AWS DevOps or SysOps would be highly desirable.

The Software Developer will work with a team of experts in Earth Science data informatics and Software Engineers to support a NASA Earth Science Data Center (https://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov) located in Greenbelt, MD. The ADNET team is involved in supporting the archiving and distribution of Earth Science data from NASA Earth Science missions, development of online discovery and analysis applications (https://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov). The successful candidate will have technical development responsibilities and help with planning, coordination and delivery of applications based on infrastructure-as-code concepts. The ideal candidate must have experience and expertise with container-based architectures Docker and Kubernetes and with AWS server-less services (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, etc.) and managing resources through Infrastructure as Code (IaaC).

Responsibilities:

  • Working with Science Product Owners to plan and support sprints, or finalize requirements for release plans
  • Developing software in a continuous development/continuous integration (CI/CD) framework
  • Lead or coordinate project teams in ongoing development streams
  • Deploying and validating production releases
  • Ensuring availability of the production system
  • Migrating current data services to AWS
  • Communicating with stakeholders on releases and system status

Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science  or a related Physical Sciences (Atmospheric, Hydrology, Physics etc.) with significant cloud based or high performance computational experience
  • Min 3 years of development experience in support of distributed scientific software applications
  • Experience with structured software development using any or all of the following: Python, JavaScript/Node.js
  • Demonstrated experience in developing code, implementation and adopting to cloud strategy for example develop scripts to create, monitor and control AWS-hosted infrastructure
  • Experience Using Github for Open Source Development
  • Atlassian Tools Suite – Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo
  • Hands-on experience with AWS Serverless Services: AWS Step, ECS/Fargate
  • Experience with infrastructure/platform management, and deploying/troubleshooting applications using AWS services. Preferably, familiarity with AWS CloudFormation or Terraform
  • Solid understanding and experience with configuration management and source code management (Git)
  • Experience with automated testing, continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD)
  • Solid understanding of Linux
  • Experience with Integrated development environments (IDE) and collaborative code development for example Jupyter Notebook
  • Passionate about the concept of infrastructure as code and leverages modern tools to define, build and manage containerized infrastructure
  • Good understanding of core principles of Scrum and agile development in letter and spirit
  • USA Citizen or Permanent Residency 

Desired:

  • 1-3 years related experience with data formats Zaar, HDF/HDF-EOS, HDF5, netCDF4, GRIB, and related metadata
  • Experience working with earth or environmental science data formats and data records using remote sensing satellite data
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency Required
