Science Writer

We are seeking a Senior Science Writer to support and write about NASA missions and campaigns. The successful candidate will serve as a key member of NASA’s Earth Science News team, will be based at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, and:

  • Contribute to news stories for press releases, the NASA portal, the NASA Global Climate Change website, and other NASA websites as appropriate
  • Create material for and contribute to NASA’s social media efforts
  • Develop story ideas through interactions with NASA science writers and scientists and engineers and others at Goddard and other NASA centers
  • Write for other NASA communications products, including video and documentary scripts, vodcasts, image captions, and educational materials. Research, write and provide visuals describing the wide variety of NASA’s Earth science elements
  • Provide media relations and other communications support to scientists and public affairs offices at conferences as required

Required Skills:

  • BA/BS or master’s degree in English, journalism, or technical writing
  • Significant ability to write, edit and interview while being creative, adaptable and comfortable with new media trends
  • Extensive experience in translating complex concepts into compelling, public-friendly feature articles
  • Facility with developing contacts and relationships with scientific and technical divisions across and outside of NASA and a knack for mining news and feature content
  • Strong ability to self-manage, work under pressure, meet commitments in a deadline-driven environment and take in stride the extensive review and collaborative process in what is a large, complex organization
  • Ability to effectively handle diverse responsibilities and multiple tasks in parallel
  • Must be a team player with excellent customer orientation, good rapport with people, and a willingness to travel
  • Must be US citizen or Permanent Resident

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in writing about science or technical subjects for non-scientists
  • Familiarity with Earth science, NASA missions and projects and global climate change science 
  • Familiarity with at least one standard style manual (e.g., Associated Press Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style)
  • Ability to conceptualize, assign and locate related graphics.  Familiarity with HTML, content management systems, or graphics software knowledge helpful
