SA017 AWS and Linux System Administrator

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC, https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking a skilled Amazon Web Services (AWS) System Administrator to ensure the security of our Cloud and on-premise infrastructure by implementing industry best-practices.

At the CCMC, we are hosting a unique and expanding collection of space science and space weather models developed by the international research community (currently more than 80 models). We also provide custom simulation and visualization services. Access to simulation outputs is made available to the scientific community via a variety of dissemination systems. You will be working in a hybrid environment consisting of servers located in the Cloud and at GSFC. Daily activities will include: system management of LINUX servers, supporting software development and test activities, deploying and configuring applications, and assisting with system performance tuning and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage CCMC AWS infrastructure, systems, and monitoring to support our growing needs
  • Configure, monitor, maintain and troubleshoot Linux instances in AWS to comply with NASA security policies
  • Collaborate with other system administrators and developers to develop archive backup and migrate functional hot backup of CCMC systems currently not in AWS
  • Explore other AWS services, such as serverless computing, containers services, load balancing, etc., and whether those services can be applied as modern solutions to meet CCMC goals and challenges
  • Design and/or modify our AWS environment so that it’s scalable and high performing.
  • Develop an understanding of how on-premise High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters work
  • Install, configure, and maintain libraries and applications
  • Manage end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best practices
  • Develop and maintain documentation about current environment setup, standard operating procedures, and best practices
  • Explore and integrate new technologies and/or processes to increase efficiency and provide additional capabilities to users
  • Work to minimize manual processes by using and maintaining automation and modern configuration management tools
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • US citizenship is a must
  • At least ten years experience in RHEL/CentOS Linux system administration
  • Experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) services configuration and administration using AWS Console and CLI scripting
  • Experience in AWS cloud services including EC2, VPC, ELB, RDS, IAM, S3, and etc.
  • Experience troubleshooting AWS services
  • Working experience of cloud based security protocols, policies, and multi-factor authentication best practices
  • Self-starter and self-motivated to find issues, seek out solutions, and find opportunities for optimization
  • Willingness to learn and keep up with the constant evolution of infrastructure technology and security requirement
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • High Performance Computing experience
  • Window OS experience
  • AWS certifications are a plus
  • Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes configuration, management, and troubleshooting
  • Experience using Git and configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.
