SA011 Desktop System Administrator

This position requires a highly motivated individual with an interest in computer system support for Desktop systems in a mixed operating system environment consisting primarily of Windows, and Macintosh with some Linux systems.  Candidates familiar with more than one of these OS varieties, or with significant experience with Mac systems are strongly encouraged to apply. In addition to routine system administration, the candidate will provide some  IT Security compliance support consistent with mandates as required by NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, MD. The successful candidate will carry on support as System Administrator (SA) for desktop systems in tasks ranging from small to medium size functional groups using a ticketing system and potentially collaborate with other SAs, engineers or developers to sustain and maintain ongoing daily desktops, print or other networked services for the users.  


  • Install hardware and software for desktop and mobile systems
  • Keep systems and applications up-to-date with patches
  • Enforce contract and customer security policies
  • Provide technical support to users
  • Participate in regular team meetings and provide progress reports
  • Document helpdesk work via ticketing system
  • Document procedures on wiki
  • Track software licenses and warranties
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives
  • Keep up-to-date with security bulletins and customer mandates
  • Attend OS-specific working group meetings as well as security-related meetings/presentations at GSFC
  • Analyze logs
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Some experience managing Mac OS systems.
  • Experience with basic hardware troubleshooting and repair
  • User assistance experience and a service oriented mindset to resolve and troubleshoot user problems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including technical and service writing and the ability to document work
  • A security mindset, a willingness to learn, a team-orientated approach, and great customer service skills
  • U.S. Citizenship


  • Experience with Microsoft Windows systems; knowledge of Linux/Unix is a plus
  • Experience with Shell programming and at least one object oriented scripting language (Python, Ruby, PHP, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Experience with one or more of the following applications or tools: Jamf, BigFix, ITSC, McAfee MVM, NESSUS, Managed Software Center (Munki), WSUS, Symantec End-Point Protection, Active Directory, MS Office.
