SA006 Desktop System Administrator

This position requires a highly motivated individual with at least 5+ years of Systems Administration (SA) support for Desktop systems, primarily Macintosh support with some Microsoft Windows experience. In addition to routine system administration, the candidate will provide IT Security compliance support to the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Support Center (GES DISC) within NASA Goddard in Greenbelt, MD (link: The successful candidate will carry on support as System Administrator (SA) for the GES DISC NASA systems and its archive.


  • Install hardware and software for desktop and mobile systems
  • Keep systems and applications up-to-date with patches
  • Enforce contract and customer security policies
  • Provide technical support to users
  • Participate in regular team meetings and provide progress reports
  • Document helpdesk work via ticketing system
  • Document procedures on wiki
  • Track software licenses and warranties
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives
  • Keep up-to-date with security bulletins and customer mandates
  • Attend OS-specific working group meetings as well as security-related meetings/presentations at GSFC
  • Analyze logs
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Five or more years of hands-on SA experience
  • Experience primarily managing Mac OS systems with some experience with Windows systems
  • Experience with basic hardware troubleshooting and repair
  • User assistance experience
  • Understanding of TCP/IP/networking including routing and switching concepts, firewalls, and wireless networks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including technical and service writing and the ability to document work
  • A security mindset, a willingness to learn, a team-orientated approach, and great customer service skills
  • U.S. Citizenship is a must


  • Experience with Linux/Unix systems
  • Hands-on experience with RPM-based Linux distributions, RHCE certification a plus Virtualization engines (XEN, KVM, etc.)
  • Experience with Shell programming and at least one object oriented scripting language (Python, Ruby, PHP, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Server virtualization and storage area network (SAN)
  • Experience with one or more of the following applications: Jamf, BigFix, ITSC, McAfee MVM, NESSUS, Managed Software Center (Munki), WSUS, Yum, Symantec End-Point Protection, Active Directory, Nagios, NAMS, Site Minder Open SSO, Apache httpd, Apache Tomcat, and SSL certificates, MS Office
