ES211 Outreach Coordinator/Public Engagement Specialist

ADNET is looking for someone to serve as a member of the NASA Heliophysics communications and outreach, amplifying science, missions, and programs via a variety of written and public engagement methods. The audiences focused on will include both a public outreach audience as well as the scientific community – both inside and outside NASA. As a translator between scientists and engineers and the public, you need patience, an ability to accept constructive criticism, and a healthy self-confidence in your craft. The public has high expectations for the depth and quality of NASA’s communications, and this demands acute attention to detail and accuracy. Outreach Coordinator position reports to the Prime Contractor Earth Science Group Manager and the Task Lead for the SESDA Contract.

Job will include such responsibilities as:

  • Working closely with the rest of the communications and outreach team to make sure that a wide variety of Heliophysics content is shared with public, NASA and scientific audiences
  • Liaising with the Heliophysics Division, heliophysics communications team, and the Space Science Education Consortium to leverage expertise and information into a concerted public engagement effort
  • Helping to coordinate, organize and support outreach activities (including logistics, handouts, staffing schedules, etc.) for a variety of events, including association meetings, festivals, informal education venues, science conferences, etc.
  • Representing NASA’s Heliophysics division at a variety of outreach events and staffing NASA exhibit booths.
  • Providing presentations about NASA’s Heliophysics efforts to a variety of audiences including schools, science conferences and informal education events.
  • Creating materials and hands-on outreach activities for informal education.
  • Writing, editing, and assisting in developing written and multi-media products (i.e. mission flyers, postcards, posters, website text, social media content) to be shared with various public, scientific and stakeholder communities
  • Writing, editing, and assisting with developing communications and engagement activities that highlight recent heliophysics science and mission milestones to NASA audiences.  This includes coordinating weekly written highlights and sharing information widely within the agency to meet presentation, report, and website needs for those outside the Heliophysics division.
  • Writing, editing, and assisting to develop communications with the non-NASA science community – through a variety of printed, email and social media options
  • Supporting the incorporation of heliophysics information into larger Science Mission Directorate and NASA-wide outreach projects

Required:

  • Bachelors/Masters in education, social science, journalism, science writing, communication, or related field
  • Background in physics/astronomy
  • Background in formal and informal education
  • 0-3 years informal education outreach experience
  • 1-3 years science writing experience
  • Knowledge of AP style writing
  • Strong teamwork and organizational skills
  • Experience in project management
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once

Preferred:

  • Experience in communications, journalism, or outreach
  • Familiarity with heliophysics and/or space science community
