HP083 Curation Scientist

We are seeking a Data Curation Scientist to support the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) located at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland. SPDF is the active and permanent archive of NASA for space physics data, covering regions from close to the Sun to the local interstellar medium of the solar system. SPDF provides public access of data through many services, including the data browsing and exploring system called Coordinated Data Analysis Web (CDAWeb), and enables cross-disciplinary and collaborative research worldwide. Currently, SPDF archives science data from about 70 Heliophysics missions, mission groups, or projects. To meet the increased demands of archiving and serving upcoming new Heliophysics missions and research-generated data, we are seeking a Data Curation Scientist, particularly in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere (ITM) field.

Position Duties:

  • Working as the central person for interacting with assigned specific missions or projects, attending mission/project data-related team meetings (in person or virtual), soliciting new datasets, performing quality controls of datasets and associated metadata, and improving metadata to enable data services at SPDF especially at CDAWeb
  • Assisting the Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE) working team for the SPASE data registry of the assigned missions or projects
  • Supporting users by answering their data-related questions, providing the user feedback to data providers of relevant missions or projects

  • Master’s or PhD degree in related field (physics, space physics, or data science)
  • Work experience with space science, especially in the ionosphere-thermosphere-mesosphere field
  • Familiarity with Common Data Format (CDF) or Network CDF (NetCDF) data and metadata standards
  • Proficiency in programming using IDL, Python, or MATLAB

The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Self-motivated to find problems and seek out optimized solutions
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, detail-oriented, and methodical
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Enthusiasm for improving Heliophysics data archives and services
