HP059 Junior Software Developer

We are seeking an early-career software developer to support the development of an intuitive user interface (UI) for the Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) model at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. This position will manage and integrate the standard WSA model outputs, realizations, performance metrics, coronal maps, and magnetic footpoint maps with Python-based visualization packages such as Cartopy and Plotly.

The objective of the UI is to support both scientific analysis of and interaction with the WSA output as well as provide a tool for space weather forecasters to quickly assess the model output as well as the confidence of the prediction. This UI should have the flexibility to run on multiple different platforms both in a local or hosted setting. Coordination with internal and external partners will be necessary to design the UI with interoperability and clear user instructions.

This is a remote (teleworking) part-time position which will entail approximately 10-20 hours per week.

  • Develop compatible code to interface with the existing WSA Python code to interactively display the output of the model.
  • Design an intuitive UI to display useful information to scientists and space weather forecasters.
  • Deliver a UI that is platform independent and can run in a variety of environments from local access to webhosted.
  • Interact with stakeholders to understand and incorporate current needs and future capabilities.
  • Write instructions on how to use the UI and ongoing documentation of code.

Experience (at least one year):

  • Familiarity with concepts in space weather and specifically the WSA model output.
  • Experience with programming in Python and specifically with the Plotly package.
  • Experience with using a Git workflow for software development.
  • Ability to present work to a variety of stakeholders and integrate constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work independently and in a remote setting.

Education: BS degree in Computer Science or Engineering. Current undergraduate students will be considered.

  • Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required
