HP058 Application Programmer Interface (API) Developer

We are seeking an Application Programmer Interface (API) Developer to support the development of services offered by the Helioviewer Project at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The two main interfaces for these services are a web-based visualization application Helioviewer (www.helioviewer.org) and a downloadable Java application JHelioviewer (www.jhelioviewer.org). These services allow users to browse images and generate movies of solar observations obtained from a variety of NASA spacecraft. Helioviewer Project code can be found at www.github.com/Helioviewer-Project. The API Developer will work closely with a web developer and a small international team to maintain and grow the Helioviewer Project.

Position duties:

  • Develop application programming interfaces to new and existing Helioviewer Project services.
  • Containerization of Helioviewer Project services.
  • Deployment into a cloud environment.
  • Maintain databases to support Helioviewer services.
  • Ensure minimum downtime of Helioviewer services.
  • Maintain services as underlying packages change.
  • Manage software using the Git version control system.
  • Troubleshoot, track, and resolve technical issues.
  • Work with users and management to improve existing features and develop new applications.

Education: Bachelors in Computer Science or Information Technology (or equivalent degree/diploma)


Required Experience (at least one year of experience in a majority of the following areas):

  • MySQL
  • PHP
  • Linux OS
  • Containerization (e.g., Docker)
  • Deploying applications to cloud architectures (e.g., AWS)
  • Git version control system

Desired experience:

  • Python programming
  • Software lifecycle methodologies
