HP054 Web Application Developer

We are seeking a Web Application Developer with a strong background in Javascript and WebGL to support the development of the client interface of the Helioviewer visualization tool (www.helioviewer.org) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Helioviewer is a browser-based interface (implemented principally in Javascript, PHP, and Python) that allows users to browse images and generate movies of solar observations obtained from a variety of NASA spacecraft missions. The aim of the Helioviewer Project is to visualize solar physics data for everyone everywhere. The web application helioviewer.org allows users to overlay data from multiple telescopes, make screenshots and movies, and share them via YouTube. Helioviewer Project code can be found at github.com/Helioviewer-Project. The successful candidate will work closely with an API and Containerization Developer in a small international team to maintain and grow the Helioviewer Project.


Position duties:

  • Adapting modern 3rd party components, frameworks, and markups to create useful Web applications
  • Designing, prototyping, and implementing useful user interface elements
  • Maintaining the replication of data and databases between multiple servers
  • Ensuring minimum downtime of Helioviewer services during server upgrades
  • Maintaining software using the Git version control system
  • Troubleshooting, tracking, and resolving technical issues
  • Working with users and management to improve existing features and develop new applications

Required Experience (at least one year of demonstrated experience in each of the following areas):

  • PHP
  • JavaScript/jQuery/modern web frameworks
  • WebGL
  • Git version control system

Desired experience:

  • Python programming
  • Software lifecycle methodologies
  • Deploying applications to cloud architectures such as Amazon Web Services

Education: Bachelors in Computer Science or Information Technology (or equivalent degree/diploma)

US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required
