HP053 Scientific Software Developer

We are seeking a scientific software developer to support the Heliospheric Physics Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The position involves developing and maintaining software that is written in Python and Interactive Data Language (IDL) to perform data processing, visualization, and analysis of observations from NASA space science missions such as DSCOVR, Wind, Parker Solar Probe, and Solar Orbiter.  We are seeking candidates who demonstrate problem solving skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work with little supervision and as part of a team.

Position Duties:

  • Support the development and maintenance of current and new software in the Heliospheric Physics Laboratory.
  • Investigate the application of modern machine learning (ML) techniques to improve the analysis and interpretation of heliospheric observations and magnetospheric phenomena.
  • Support the development of Web interfaces that serve heliospheric and magnetospheric data products to the scientific community.
  • Maintain software using the Git version control system.
  • Assist with the research activities of Laboratory scientists.

Required Experience:

  • BS in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or physical sciences.
  • 2+ years programming Python in a scientific environment.
  • 1+ years using code repository and version control tools (e.g., Git/GitHub).
  • 1+ years developing software in a Unix/Linux environment.

Desired Experience:

  • Scripting programming languages (e.g., IDL, MATLAB).
  • Scientific data visualization tools/techniques.
  • Web development languages (JavaScript, PHP).
  • Machine Learning (ML) tools/techniques.
