HP049 Senior Machinist

We are seeking a Senior Machinist to support mechanical design and fabrication activities in the Heliophysics Science Division (HSD) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. This position will involve the operation of machine shop equipment that includes conventional milling machines, CNC machines, lathes, saws, drill presses, and hand tools.


  • Fabricate customer-required precision components for instruments, payloads, and test hardware for flight, non-flight, and R&D projects.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations for fabrication of custom components, including estimates of cost and schedule for production.
  • Order and inspect required mechanical equipment (and supporting hardware materials) for faults, safety concerns, and performance anomalies.  Report issues to HSD Lab supervisor and coordinate repairs and maintenance with manufacturer as necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry standards, advancements, new technology, and skills.
  • Provide recommendations on industry advancements that enhance capabilities and maintain industry techniques and standards.
  • Attend fabrication and tooling industry conferences, as necessary, to improve knowledge.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and address major safety discrepancies in reports by various GSFC Health & Safety inspections.
  • Participate in monthly HSD safety meetings, resolve safety-related problems as they arise, and ensure labs adhere to GSFC Safety and Health Awareness Checklist requirements.
  • Support HSD property management with maintaining inventory of onsite and offsite mechanical equipment, including tracking, locating, and updating current and excessed equipment.


  • Required (> 10 years):
  • CAD/CAM software for design and fabrication.
  • CNC programming utilizing Esprit and Mastercam software.
  • Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM).
  • Desired:
  • Clean room ESD certification.
  • Previous experience supporting NASA engineering projects.
