HP043 CCMC Scientific Software Developer

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC; https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking a skilled software developer ideally with a science background or who has worked closely with scientists on the design and implementation of computational scientific models, associated advanced visualization, and/or the provision of metadata for discovery and access. 

The CCMC hosts a unique and expanding collection of space science and space weather models developed by the international research community. The CCMC provides custom simulation and visualization services, and offers access to simulation outputs to the scientific community via a variety of dissemination systems which include: CCMC Vis–web-based interactive visualization; integrated space weather analysis (iSWA); and Kamodo–open source software for access and interpolation of model outputs in Python (https://github.com/nasa/Kamodo).

The software developer is expected to be detail oriented with excellent communication, organizational, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. 

Duties:

  • Work with CCMC scientists to modernize the online visualization framework.
  • Assist the CCMC Kamodo Science Lead with developing Kamodo as the backend for the online visualization framework and potentially in the iSWA next-gen system. 
  • Incorporate and add metadata following the “SPASE” metadata standard  (http://spase-group.org) both for output produced by models hosted at the CCMC and for the models themselves.  
  • Collaborate with domain-specific (solar-heliospheric, magnetosphere, ionosphere-thermosphere-mesosphere) scientists, model developers, data analysts, and software/system engineers to develop high-quality, well-tested, maintainable code using modern software development best practices.
  • Lead a broad range of interdisciplinary development and design activities, making recommendations and implementing actions involving highly complex technical problems, including those that apply to unique state-of-the-art integrated systems.
  • Contribute to proposals, presentations, and technical papers as needed.

Experience (5+ years)

  • Visualization software, plotting libraries, and/or Web development
  • Programming in Python, Perl, IDL, Fortran, C, C++, MATLAB, Java  
  • Working in a Linux environment with graphic processing units (GPUs) and/or High-Performance Computing (HPC) is a plus

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, with work experience in a scientific environment a plus
