GD112 – Scientific Web Data Visualization & Developer

This position is for a mid-level Scientific Data Visualization Analyst/Web Design Engineer or developer. We seek a highly motivated individual with 3-5 years of experience working with visualization aspects of scientific data and designing or developing web-based application and interfaces to make scientific data presented on-line or accessible by web services to NASA users. 

The Precipitation Processing System (PPS) operates within a multi-partner system of satellite missions, like the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), or the legacy Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).  The PPS serves to process, analyze, archive, and distribute precipitation and rainfall data to a wide research community at various institutions including universities, agencies, as well as the general public domestically and internationally. The Scientific Web Data Visualization Engineer/developer ideally will have a broad range of data presentation, web programming skills, as well as User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) familiarity for online services especially as relates to weather, climate or atmospheric related data.

Required:

  • BS computer sciences, Environmental/Atmospheric or other physical sciences or related fields
  • 3-5 years of experience in web programming and developing web applications using client-side technologies
  • Experience in HTML, CSS, Java, JavaScript, Python
  • Work experience or course work related to scientific data manipulation or understanding of atmospheric, environmental, meteorological sciences and data analysis or visualization
  • Working experience with database programming (MySQL) or Apache web server
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Creative thinker that works independently with minimum directions
  • US Citizen or US Permanent Resident

Desired:

  • Data Visualization Experience (preferably in Python, or R, IDL, Matlab)
  • Experience with Specific JavaScript libraries (JQuery, chart.js)
  • Ability to develop specific software based on general customer requirements
  • Ability to develop software with minimal supervision or direct support
  • Ability to explore data and develop new modes of visualization
  • Experience writing well-documented code as well as external usage documentation (ReadMe files, User Guides, etc.)
