ES197 NASA Earth Sciences Research Results Coordinator

This position supports the Research and Analysis (R&A) component of NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD), focusing on the content development based on results coming out of the R&A program and ESD management. A significant focus will be on the maintenance and evolution of the “results portal” that was developed in order to provide a consistent and user-friendly way for sharing of results between researchers, communicators, and managers. The successful candidate will coordinate with others involved in results dissemination and communication for the various components of ESD and work to assure integration and consistency of relevant products. The successful candidate’s home office will be located at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 •   Support the continuing maintenance and evolution of the results portal that is used to collect Earth Science research results from NASA centers.

•    Work with NASA center science management to encourage and facilitate the use of the results portal as a primary means for collecting results and bringing to attention of HQ personnel.

•   Work with HQ R&A program scientists/managers and related staff to assure routine use in assessing program progress and highlighting results for use in presentations, management information, etc.

•    Work with HQ staff to facilitate incorporation of program results, especially those provided through the results portal, into R&A related web sites and the development of related products (e.g., presentations by R&A leadership, annual “top 10 R&A accomplishments”).

•    Work with communicators at HQ and centers to understand their needs, to help them be aware of the nature of resources available, and to support two-way communication between HQ and centers that can enhance the visibility and impact of results generated from the R&A program.

•    Engage with external entities (e.g., professional societies, other federal agencies, interagency groups) to enhance the visibility of NASA Earth Science research results and to develop coordinated approaches when multiple agency contributions are best shared as part of integrated stories.

•    Engage with colleagues to support development of results-based products for internal and external use that reflect the synergies among the key elements of NASA’s Earth Science Division (research, applications, flight, technology, data).

 Desired Education and Experience:

 •   Knowledge of and/or experience with the scientific drivers of Earth System Science, ideally with particular interest and/or experience with global change as it impacts one or more of Earth’s components (atmosphere, ocean, land, cryosphere, biosphere).

  • Familiarity with one or more of products of the primary emphases of NASA and/or closely related Earth Science research (e.g., data from space-based, airborne, and surface-based platforms, as well as earth system models).
  • Interest in and experience with information technology systems as needed to help maintain and evolve the results portal.
  • Interest in and experience with engaging with scientists in support of collecting and sharing of research results.
  •  Interest in and experience in developing communications products (focused on those for research community) based on NASA results.
  • Possess a BS/BA in science, science communications, journalism, science policy, data science, etc.  An MS is preferred.
  • Have five+ years of experience with Earth Science data, Science communication, data services and distribution.
