ES190 Senior Science Writer

ADNET Systems, Inc., seeks a science writer to support its Space Science and Data Analysis (SESDA) contract at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The writer will be part of a communications team supporting NASA’s Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project, and will produce a wide range of stories related to NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS), including content related to science results, data and data products, and profiles of people using EOSDIS data.

The regular location for this position will be at ADNET’s Goddard Corporate Park office located approximately two miles from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. This work may begin as a telecommuting position until state and customer restrictions on access to GSFC are lifted.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in the physical sciences or in science journalism along with strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to relate technical concepts to non-technical audiences. The ability to work with relatively little supervision and to work effectively as part of a team is essential. Experience writing under deadline for a daily newspaper or monthly/weekly magazine, especially a science-oriented publication, is desired, as is familiarity with Earth science data systems, NASA’s Earth science program, and/or experience using NASA EOSDIS data.

Basic requirements

  • BA/BS in the physical sciences or science journalism. An advanced degree in one of these fields is preferred.
  • At least three years’ experience as a science writer.
  • Experience translating highly technical content for non-technical audiences essential.
  • Experience working under/managing publication deadlines with a newspaper or science-oriented magazine/newsletter desired.
  • Experience working with graphic artists desired.
  • Familiarity working under formal style guidelines (e.g., Associated Press, Chicago Manual of Style, NASA Stylebook, etc.) essential.

This job is with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s SESDA 4 contract and therefore requires US citizenship or Greencard
