ES171 Senior Science Writer

Help NASA teach people about their Planet.

The successful candidate will provide science writing and outreach support to the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center Solar System Exploration Division.

Summary of job duties:
• Research and write feature stories, press releases, advisories and tip sheets o highlight the work done by scientists in the Solar System Exploration Division (SSED) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Develop products that meet a high standard for storytelling, reporting and accuracy
• Mine science and technology stories from research journals, scientific meetings, abstracts, lectures, and old-fashioned beat reporting
• Collaborate with video producers, scientific visualizers and social media team members on complementary products
• Cultivate relationships with Goddard researchers to keep informed about developments in planetary science and to help set priorities for stories
• Write/edit/update material for brochures, fliers, reports and other internal SSED products
• Track media coverage of planetary science
• Organize occasional media days and news conferences
• Develop new methods of science news delivery
• Coordinate with SSED Communications Manager and the Office of Communication on assignments and distribution of media products
• Participate in weekly meetings with the SSED News Team, led by the SSED Communications Manager
• Participate in weekly Newsroom meetings, led by the Goddard News Chief
• The selected individual will be part of the SSED News Team

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Space, Planetary Science, or Science Journalism
• 3+ years experience in reporting science with non-scientists
• Ability to work independently as well as within interdisciplinary teams
• Exemplary organizational skills and careful attention to detail
• Time management skills to balance multiple projects at once
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working with internal collaborators and external customers
• Experience using the Microsoft Office suite
• Must be US citizen or Permanent Resident

• Master’s degree in Space, Planetary Science, or Science Journalism
• Experience in science or technical writing for the public
• Experience in copy, editing and/or proofreading, and knowledge of AP Style
• Experience with graphic design and design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud)
• Experience in developing videos or other broadcast-quality content
