AP072 Scientific Software Developer

Want an exciting career at NASA, developing scientific software to help analyze and process high-energy astrophysics data?

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, nestled in the Maryland suburbs of Greenbelt, is just 30 minutes from the heartbeat of America – Washington, D.C. Now you can have it all – the nightlife, museums, great food and theatre, while working at a place that pushes the envelope of science every day, yet spy a deer or a Canada Goose, as you stroll the grounds of Goddard during lunch.

We are seeking a Scientific Software Developer with 5+ years’ experience (primarily Python) to join the staff at NASA/GSFC’s High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC), the primary archive for NASA’s (and other space agencies’) missions studying electromagnetic radiation from extremely energetic cosmic phenomena ranging from black holes to the Big Bang. Specific duties of this position include writing Python wrappers for the existing FTOOLS, writing new tools in Python, helping to develop Python notebooks for HEASARC users, and interacting with colleagues at other archives (IRSA, MAST).

Required:
• BS or higher in Astrophysics, Astronomy, or Physics
• 5+ years software development (incl. testing, documentation, configuration control)
• 3+ years Python, including packaging for open source distribution and web tools
• 1+ years C/C++/Fortran or a combination

Desired:
• 1+ years Jupyter notebooks
• 1+ years Docker
• Linking Python and C
• Python frameworks such as Flask and/or Django
• Contributing to the astropy open development community
• Familiarity with Virtual Observatory standards
• SQL or similar database experience
• Development of secure web-based APIs
• Configuration control using Git.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or have Greencard
